About

Who we are:

Forgotten Mississippi is an ongoing project to document and interpret historical sites related to Mississippi history.  The project will mainly focus on those sites that have received little or no attention but are closely tied to the history of the state.

Why we started the site:

Why is this important? According to the American Historical Association, “Many Americans will never visit the museums of the Smithsonian or the Civil War battlefields that dot the countryside of the South. Most will never travel the entire length of the Oregon Trail, or stand at the Alamo. In short, most Americans will never have the opportunity to visit major historical sites spread across our country. Rather, they will connect with history through the historical agencies in their own communities.”1 Forgotten Mississippi is an attempt to bring together as much information as possible for those of us who are fascinated by local history and do not have the opportunity or resources to discover it on their own.

Why are there ads on the site?

Rest assured that this site is not a get rich quick scheme.  The ads were incorporated into the site in an effort to help offset, if not cover, the costs associated with maintaining the site.  At the moment the costs are minimal, but if the site reaches its full potential those costs will increase dramatically.  All ads will be as unobtrusive as possible and we will never knowingly use pop-up advertising.
